Commit to life-long learning
It's the only way to get better. THE ONLY WAY. As the great Lenin said, "Learn, learn, and learn."
I know, I know! Couldn't help it...
But seriously. Think about the time you spend every day on your craft. There goes your life, day by day, and what you do every day accumulates into years and decades.
Malcolm Gladwell calculated that to get good at anything takes about 10,000 hours.
And I'm telling you, that in addition to that, to continue getting good at anything, including writing, is to not only write every day, but also learn every day.
For example, my daily writing routine includes at least 2 hours of reading, often up to 4. This is my daily learning time. I either read other novels, or non-fiction books about how to get better, or I study books, scripts and films to break down the structure, or I meet with people who teach me new things (currently it's my editor and writing partner Erik). In the future I also plan to take classes and seminars.
What's your daily learning routine? Or, what do you want it to be, and what stops you from committing to it?
